The Office of the Registrar of the Supreme Court is established by Section 10 (2) of Judicial Service Act and Section 9 of the Supreme Court Act. The Registrar acts in accordance with the direction of the Chief Justice, the Court and the rules of the Court.
The functions of the Registrar are outlined in Section 10(1) of the Supreme Court Act. In particular, the Registrar is in charge of record keeping and the day-to-day administration of the Court. The Registrar is responsible for—
- the establishment and maintenance of the Registry;
- the acceptance, transmission, service and custody of documents in accordance with the rules;
- taxing costs of any proceedings before the Court as between the parties;” (d) certifying that any order, direction or decision is an order,
- direction or decision of the Court, or of the Chief Justice or
- other judge, as the case may be;
- causing to be kept records of the proceedings and the minutes
- of the meetings of the Court and such other records as the
- Court may direct;
- the management and supervision of the staff of the Court;
Hon. Letizia Wachira-Current Registrar Supreme Court of Kenya
Currently serving as the Supreme Court Registrar of Kenya, Hon. Letizia Muthoni Wachira is known to many as a humble and hardworking lady who over the years has been a very firm and straight forward magistrate before being redeployed to the position of Supreme Court Registrar. With over 20 years of legal experience, Hon. Letizia Muthoni Wachira is among the youngest serving judicial officers at her level. Her principles, hard work and determination over the years have placed her at her current position in the Judiciary. The Hon. Chief Justice Martha Koome has personally praised her hard work and determination in her duties. The Hon. Registrar has served as a District Magistrate II, Resident Magistrate, Senior Resident Magistrate, Principal Magistrate, Senior Principal Magistrate, Chief Magistrate and now her current position as the Supreme Court Registrar.
Hon. Wachira was born in Meru County, and holds a Bachelor of Laws degree (LLB) from the University of Nairobi (2000), Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Kenya School of Law (2002) and a Master of Laws degree (LLM) from the University of Nairobi (2013).
She has also undergone various trainings including: International Workshop on Violence against Women in cooperation with International Organization for Migration (IOM) Kenya; International Protection and Refuge Law Kenya; Anti-Corruption Exploratory Workshops; ‘Team Work in Times of Change’ and Transformation trainings by the Judiciary of Kenya; Training Conference on Sentencing Guidelines; and Asset Recovery Jurisprudence Training.
Hon. Wachira also holds a Certificate of the Pilgrimage of Jerusalem. She is a wife and a mother.
