Inspite of enormous natural resource endowments, the continent of Africa grapples with abject poverty. According to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) 2016 Human Development Report for Africa launched on 2nd May, 2017, some 70 percent of working adults earn less than $3.10 per day. The report notes that in almost every African country, some groups are more disadvantaged than others, exacerbating levels of vulnerability, and widening the inequality gap across generations. The report warns that the gaps are set to widen unless deep-rooted development barriers are urgently addressed.
