Hon. Mr. Justice Gachoka Paul Mwaniki

From the misty slopes of Mt. Kenya in Chinga, Hon. Justice Mwaniki Gachoka carved a path through the legal jungle to become a towering figure in ethics, governance, and the law.

Admitted to the High Court of Kenya in 1991, he built Mwaniki Gachoka & Co. Advocates from a two-person operation in 1993 into a thriving, mid-sized law firm. But the courtroom was just the beginning. In July 2022, he traded the advocate’s robe for the judge’s bench, now serving at the Court of Appeal and doubling as Vice President of the Kenya Judges Welfare Association, where he ensures the guardians of justice are well-armed for their noble fight.

A crusader for integrity, he left his mark at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) (2016-2021), fearlessly tackling corruption. He knows procurement like a well-thumbed statute book, having chaired the Public Procurement Administrative Review Board (2007-2013) and served on the Public Procurement Complaints, Review & Appeals Board (2005-2007)—ensuring that tenders serve the public, not private pockets.

A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a Chartered Arbitrator, he has shaped the arbitration landscape with a keen eye for justice. His Master’s in Philosophy and Ethics (Strathmore, 2016) saw him dissect public procurement oversight with surgical precision seeing him defend his thesis dubbed “Public Procurement Oversight Authority: An assessment of its effectiveness in promoting ethics and fighting corruption in Public Procurement”. His scholarly works—spanning corruption in arbitration, procurement ethics, and even wildlife crime—grace prestigious journals.

For his stellar service, he was decorated as an Elder of the Order of the Burning Spear (EBS) in 2020. A trainer, mediator, and thought leader he remains steadfast in his pursuit of justice, proving that ethics isn’t just an ideal—it’s the backbone of a thriving society.

He continues to influence policy, jurisprudence, and governance with an unwavering commitment to justice and integrity even in the Judiciary.

An accomplished hiker who has conquered Mt Kenya and Mt Kilimanjaro among others. He loves nature and is an enthusiast environmentalist. He is the current chairperson of the Friends of Karua which works jointly with Kenya Forest Service to preserve and protect the famous Karura Forest
