Hon. Mr. Justice Gatembu Kairu, FCIArb

Born in July 1960, Justice Gatembu Kairu holds a Master of Laws degree (LLM) from Boston University (1990), Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi (1984) and a Diploma in law from the Kenya School of Law (1985).

During his private legal practice, Justice Kairu worked as a Legal Assistant with the Hamilton Harrison & Mathews Advocates law firm and as an Associate with Kimani Kairu & Company Advocates.

He co-founded the law firm of Kairu & McCourt Advocates in 1993, and remained a partner until 2009 when he moved on to become a full-time arbitrator and mediator.

Justice Kairu joined the Judiciary in 2012, upon his appointment by the President of the Republic of Kenya, as a Judge of the Court of Appeal after a competitive recruitment process conducted by the Judicial Service Commission ( JSC).

Prior to his appointment as a Judge of Appeal, Justice Kairu lectured at the University of Nairobi, School of Law since 1990. At the School, Judge Kairu taught Alternative Dispute Resolution, Banking Law, Civil Procedure and Practice, HIV/Aids and the Law, the Law of Torts and Law of International Institutions.

Further, he is a trained trainer in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) by the Center for Africa Peace and Conflict Resolution, California State University, USA. He has trained and facilitated training workshops in Kenya, Ethiopia and Tanzania. He is Fellow of the Charted Institute of Arbitrators.

In addition to his judicial functions, Justice Kairu served, and continues to serve in various committees in the Judiciary including as chair of the Integrated Court Management System Committee.
