Tributes to the Hon. Justice David Amilcar Shikomera Majanja.

It was a hot, muggy day when I reported to the Kisumu Law Courts on 13th November 2017. This was my first station as a new employee of the Judiciary, a Magistrate. The gentle breeze from the lake wafting through the corridors and windows of the building that houses the courts scarcely calmed my nerves, sweety face or palms. But it was Justice David Majanja easy-going demeanour and warm reception that at once put me at ease. “You are so young,” he quipped. “What do you know about the Judiciary,” he asked teasingly. Over the years, Justice Majanja, a towering intellect and a gentle giant of a Judge, would become a trusted and highly esteemed colleague who warmly greeted and listened to anyone and everyone, regardless of their station life. He held my hands, showed me the jurisprudential ropes, and taught me how to humanely conduct court proceedings, and deliver justice without fear or favour. Be it, the Public Service Club in Kisumu, a modest restaurant, only a whistling distance from the Kisumu Law Courts, Justice Majanja broke bread with everyone: Judges, Magistrates, lawyers and judicial staff. I looked up to him for inspiration and words of encouragement. He seemingly effortlessly delivered trailblazing judgments, but humbly and happily commended even junior colleagues for making a similar effort, with the words that will forever ring in my ears: “Beryl, excellent, excellent, excellent,” for the Ruling I delivered on 14.02.19. Go gently into the night, Justice Majanja. Knowing and working with you was a great honour and joy.

It is sad that we must say goodbye. You were a gentle giant that defined professionalism and integrity. I have read a few of your judgements and they were solomonic. You were a consummately brilliant person and professional. I have met you a few times and mainly when you visited my late dad Lawrence Itolondo in the company of your dad. Fare thee well my brother. May your soul Rest in Eternal Peace

Hon. Justice/JSC Commissioner Majanja was towering yet so humble. He exemplified a person doing good and fast. I will miss his requests for JKIA airport facilitation at 4.00am, he loved the first morning flights either to NRB/MSA/NRB. Judge Majanja simply you came, simply you left, may the Almighty receive your soul in eternal peace.

Commish... a great friend and my mentor. You mentored many but yet managed to get a personal space with everyone. I will miss the deep conversations and your infectious laughter. You taught me so much as your twin court in Commercial Division. Thank you for your mentorship. This space is simply irreplaceable. Rest in peace Commish!

Rest with the Angels Justice Majanja. You served your country well. You will be missed by many whose lives you touched. Till we meet again my friend.

Good judge, I am honored to have appeared before you and interacted with you in my legal career. You remain an inspiration to me and many. May the Lord rest your soul in eternal peace. Go well judge.
