Tributes to the Late Hon. Mr. Justice Fredrick Ochieng’ Andago

On behalf of the Judiciary and the Judicial Service Commission, I convey with profound sadness the news of the passing of Hon. Justice Fredrick Ochieng Andago, Judge of the Court of Appeal of Kenya. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Judiciary during this time of great sorrow.

Justice Ochieng joined the Judiciary in 2003 as a Judge of the High Court, where he served with distinction in various stations, including the Civil Division, Kitale, Kakamega, the Criminal Division, the Commercial and Admiralty Division, and Kisumu. In 2022, he was elevated to the Court of Appeal.

He will be fondly remembered as a towering figure in the development of Kenya’s commercial law jurisprudence and as a strong advocate for the promotion of alternative dispute resolution. At the time of his passing, he was serving as the Chairperson of the Court Annexed Mediation Taskforce, which is spearheading the national roll-out of Court-Annexed Mediation.

Prior to joining the Judiciary, he had a distinguished career as an Advocate of the High Court in the firm of Kaplan & Stratton Advocates for almost two decades.

We stand in solidarity with his family, friends, and the entire Judiciary community during this difficult period of mourning. We call for sensitivity and compassion as we share in this collective grief.

May Hon. Justice Fred Ochieng’s soul rest in eternal peace.

Hon. Justice Martha K. Koome, EGH

Chief Justice and Chairperson of the Judicial Service Commission

Tributes Shared

May his soul rest in peace. I remember when he was the Mombasa Presiding Judge and I had just joined the media so I used to visit his high court for stories. He was very humble, down to earth and welcoming. God has picked the best amongst the rest.

Today, we gather with heavy hearts to pay tribute to our beloved cousin, Justice Fred Ochieng wuod kijana a man whose life touched many with kindness, wisdom, humility, and strength. Fred was more than a cousin; he was a brother, a mentor, and a dependable pillar within the family and community. He carried himself with dignity and treated people with respect, regardless of status or circumstance. His laughter brought warmth, his advice brought clarity, and his presence brought comfort to those around him. As wuod kijana, he carried the values of family, hard work, courage, and unity with pride. He believed in standing for truth, helping others, and keeping family bonds strong. Many will remember him for his calm spirit, generous heart, and unwavering commitment to those he loved. Though death has taken him from our sight, it cannot erase the memories he created or the impact he made in our lives. His legacy will continue to live through the lives he touched, the lessons he shared, and the love he gave so freely. To the entire family, may we find strength in one another during this difficult time. May we honour Fred not only with tears, but by living the values he stood for — unity, integrity, compassion, and resilience. Rest in peace, Fred Ochieng. Wuod kijana, your journey on earth may have ended, but your name and spirit will never be forgotten. Go well cousin, until we meet again.

It is with profound sadness that I join the Judiciary and the entire legal fraternity in paying tribute to the late Hon. Justice Fredrick Ochieng Andago, Judge of the Court of Appeal of Kenya. His passing leaves a deep void in our justice system and in the hearts of all who had the privilege of working with him. Justice Ochieng joined the Judiciary in 2003 as a Judge of the High Court, where he served with distinction in various stations, including the Civil Division, Kitale, Kakamega, the Criminal Division, the Commercial and Admiralty Division, and Kisumu. In 2022, he was elevated to the Court of Appeal, a testament to his exceptional legal acumen and commitment to justice. He will be fondly remembered as a towering figure in the development of Kenya’s commercial law jurisprudence and as a strong advocate for the promotion of alternative dispute resolution. At the time of his passing, he was serving as the Chairperson of the Court Annexed Mediation Taskforce, which is spearheading the national roll-out of Court-Annexed Mediation—an initiative that will continue to ease case backlogs and improve access to justice for the people of Kenya. Prior to joining the Judiciary, Justice Ochieng had a distinguished career as an Advocate of the High Court in the firm of Kaplan & Stratton Advocates for almost two decades. His wealth of experience and deep understanding of the law informed his approach as a judge, earning him the respect and admiration of colleagues, advocates, and litigants alike. I had the privilege of appearing before him in 2016 at the Milimani Commercial Division in Nairobi, in a Winding Up, which was a shareholder dispute involving a geothermal power production company. Representing the petitioners, I was a young lawyer who experienced firsthand his respect, courtesy, and mastery of the law. He kept on nudging us to find an amicable solution because Kenya needed more electricity production, and the parties had a bigger role in reconciling their differences for the benefit of the republic. His conduct in that matter exemplified the fairness and integrity that characterised his entire judicial career. To his beloved family, I extend my heartfelt condolences. May the God of all comfort surround you with His peace and strength during this time of great sorrow. Your father’s legacy of love, guidance, and service to the nation will continue to inspire all who knew him. The Kenyan Judiciary and the legal fraternity have lost a brilliant jurist, a compassionate colleague, and a dedicated servant of justice. May Hon. Justice Fred Ochieng’s soul rest in eternal peace. George Asewe Advocate of the High Court of Kenya
