Tributes to the Late Hon. Mr. Justice Fredrick Ochieng’ Andago

On behalf of the Judiciary and the Judicial Service Commission, I convey with profound sadness the news of the passing of Hon. Justice Fredrick Ochieng Andago, Judge of the Court of Appeal of Kenya. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Judiciary during this time of great sorrow.

Justice Ochieng joined the Judiciary in 2003 as a Judge of the High Court, where he served with distinction in various stations, including the Civil Division, Kitale, Kakamega, the Criminal Division, the Commercial and Admiralty Division, and Kisumu. In 2022, he was elevated to the Court of Appeal.

He will be fondly remembered as a towering figure in the development of Kenya’s commercial law jurisprudence and as a strong advocate for the promotion of alternative dispute resolution. At the time of his passing, he was serving as the Chairperson of the Court Annexed Mediation Taskforce, which is spearheading the national roll-out of Court-Annexed Mediation.

Prior to joining the Judiciary, he had a distinguished career as an Advocate of the High Court in the firm of Kaplan & Stratton Advocates for almost two decades.

We stand in solidarity with his family, friends, and the entire Judiciary community during this difficult period of mourning. We call for sensitivity and compassion as we share in this collective grief.

May Hon. Justice Fred Ochieng’s soul rest in eternal peace.

Hon. Justice Martha K. Koome, EGH

Chief Justice and Chairperson of the Judicial Service Commission

My heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Judge of Appeal. You were not only a distinguished judge but also a remarkable mentor. Always full of humor and cheer. You always brought lightness even to the weightiest of matters. You stood firm in your convictions and expressed yourself with eloquence and grace. Your polished command of the English language was truly admirable. May your soul rest in eternal peace.

Dear JA Fred Ochieng I knew you when you were posted to Eldoret High Court as the Resident Judge then, your firm yet kind leadership was greatly felt. Staff meetings were so enjoyable ,because of your great sense of humour, you were never confined in your chamber, at your free time you walked around the registries to see how litigants are being served as you interacted with staff. I am where I am today because you inspired most of us to pursue further studies. Your leadership in Mediation shall be missed. Your Legacy will live on. RIEP JA! Fare thee well Judge You were a fine legal mind, great Judge and a happy soul. You were a friend and mentor to many of us. Rest in peace

While we mourn the loss of a respected jurist, we also celebrate his profound and lasting legacy. Judge Ochieng was a true pioneer and champion for Alternative Dispute Resolution. His unwavering belief in **Mediation** as a tool for justice not only resolved countless disputes but also fundamentally changed our legal community for the better. His wisdom, patience, and innovative spirit inspired all of us who had the privilege to appear before him or learn from him. As an Advocate and a Mediator, I held Judge Ochieng in the highest esteem. He was not just a supporter of alternative dispute resolution; he was its champion. His vision and dedication from the bench gave credibility and momentum to the entire practice, encouraging a more compassionate and efficient path to justice for countless individuals and corporates. He will be deeply missed, but his foundational contributions will never be forgotten. I will always remember him for his keen intellect and his profound commitment to justice, which was exemplified by his pioneering role as Chairman of the COURT ANNEXED MEDIATION TASKFORCE. He understood that true justice wasn't always found in a verdict, but often in a resolution. He leaves behind a legacy of peace, fairness, and innovation that will continue to influence our legal system for generations to come. Wishing his Family and loved Ones strength and peace. May the Good Judge's Soul Rest in Eternal Peace 🕊️🕊️🕊️

May the Good God grant the Family, colleagues and friends Grace. Shalom
