Tributes to the Late Hon. Mr. Justice Fredrick Ochieng’ Andago

On behalf of the Judiciary and the Judicial Service Commission, I convey with profound sadness the news of the passing of Hon. Justice Fredrick Ochieng Andago, Judge of the Court of Appeal of Kenya. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Judiciary during this time of great sorrow.

Justice Ochieng joined the Judiciary in 2003 as a Judge of the High Court, where he served with distinction in various stations, including the Civil Division, Kitale, Kakamega, the Criminal Division, the Commercial and Admiralty Division, and Kisumu. In 2022, he was elevated to the Court of Appeal.

He will be fondly remembered as a towering figure in the development of Kenya’s commercial law jurisprudence and as a strong advocate for the promotion of alternative dispute resolution. At the time of his passing, he was serving as the Chairperson of the Court Annexed Mediation Taskforce, which is spearheading the national roll-out of Court-Annexed Mediation.

Prior to joining the Judiciary, he had a distinguished career as an Advocate of the High Court in the firm of Kaplan & Stratton Advocates for almost two decades.

We stand in solidarity with his family, friends, and the entire Judiciary community during this difficult period of mourning. We call for sensitivity and compassion as we share in this collective grief.

May Hon. Justice Fred Ochieng’s soul rest in eternal peace.

Hon. Justice Martha K. Koome, EGH

Chief Justice and Chairperson of the Judicial Service Commission

Am a mediator. I met him at the Strathmore university thrice. He was one of the most humble Judge I have ever met. Passionate about mediation. May God comfort his family.

As we wait for that advent day, may the God of comfort encompass the larger family of Justice Ochieng as they deal with his passing on. I remember his tour of duty at Eldoret with fondness. A fair Judge, who pushed Counsels to give their best. Fare thee well Judge.

Rest in peace Justice Ochieng.

It was always a joy to meet with Justice Fred Ochieng during the mediation summits. He spoke with passion & conviction that Mediation as a form of ADR is the way to go! As a mediator he was an inspiration for me. He has gone too soon. I had a brief chat with him during April Mediation Summit at Strathmore University, 2025. I will miss his sense of humour & eloquentce during his presentation as a Chair of Meduation Task Force. May the angels carry you to the bosom of our Lord Jesus Christ & comfort your family at this most difficult time. Rest in peace Judge Ochieng.

The Honourable Justice Fred Ochieng JA will be greatly missed. We at the Employment and Labour Relations Court benefitted a lot from his Lordship's stewardship in Judiciary ADR as he nicely guided us to entrench the Court Annexed Mediation. He prioritised the holding of the Court Annexed Mediation Summit for ELRC in recognition of the urgency and importance of ADR and social dialogue as a foundation of social justice in labour disputes.A mentor and great jurist with a rich sense of peerage and collegiate professional relationship. May fond memories of his goodness make us want to be better persons forever. The Almighty God to cover his family, friends and relatives at this very difficult time. His Lordship's soul rest in eternal peace. Amen.

In every session, he consistently empowered and inspired me, encouraging the pursuit of excellence in mediation and justice.
