Tributes to the Late Hon. Mr. Justice Fredrick Ochieng’ Andago

On behalf of the Judiciary and the Judicial Service Commission, I convey with profound sadness the news of the passing of Hon. Justice Fredrick Ochieng Andago, Judge of the Court of Appeal of Kenya. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Judiciary during this time of great sorrow.

Justice Ochieng joined the Judiciary in 2003 as a Judge of the High Court, where he served with distinction in various stations, including the Civil Division, Kitale, Kakamega, the Criminal Division, the Commercial and Admiralty Division, and Kisumu. In 2022, he was elevated to the Court of Appeal.

He will be fondly remembered as a towering figure in the development of Kenya’s commercial law jurisprudence and as a strong advocate for the promotion of alternative dispute resolution. At the time of his passing, he was serving as the Chairperson of the Court Annexed Mediation Taskforce, which is spearheading the national roll-out of Court-Annexed Mediation.

Prior to joining the Judiciary, he had a distinguished career as an Advocate of the High Court in the firm of Kaplan & Stratton Advocates for almost two decades.

We stand in solidarity with his family, friends, and the entire Judiciary community during this difficult period of mourning. We call for sensitivity and compassion as we share in this collective grief.

May Hon. Justice Fred Ochieng’s soul rest in eternal peace.

Hon. Justice Martha K. Koome, EGH

Chief Justice and Chairperson of the Judicial Service Commission

Tributes Shared

Rest in Peace Judge ... My condolences to the family for the demise of their loved one. May God's grace be sufficient to the family during this time of grief.

Justice Ochieng was cut from a different cloth. He was what every judge ought to be: brilliant in mind, courageous in principle, and allergic to corruption. He understood that justice is not an ornament for speeches but the lifeblood of a civilized nation. And perhaps that is why he has left so soon. For maybe heaven has need of such judges more than Kenya does—or maybe this earth simply has too little oxygen for both integrity and longevity to coexist on the same bench. James Ochieng’ Oduol.

Fellow mourners and family of the late Judge Fred Ochieng, It is with deep sorrow I write this message is condolences and farewell to Judge. I knew Judge and interacted with him before joining the Bench, 1st in piloting of Court annexed Mediation where I was accredited as mediator No 007. At that time we assisted the judiciary to launch the project on pure voluntary basis as Members of Ciarb. It was pure joy to work with the Judge, I later interacted with Judge at EAMJA 2019 at Zanzibar in my capacity of Council Member ICJ Kenya which was a partner of EAMJA. Judge , I am sad that you have left us. But super grateful for God’s blessing of having given the Judiciary a wonderful Judge. Court annexed mediation is now full anchored into the Judiciary ADR mechanisms. Your legacy is set. Rest in eternal peace JA. Keli J

On a sad note to recieve news of your passing on Dance with Angels and rest in eternal heavenly peace Justice Ochieng

My deepest heartfelt condolences. It is hard to believe that such a great and wonderful soldier and captain, a general of the justice system and more so of the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), would pass on and leave those who knew him with only memories. My heart goes out to his family, friends and judicial colleagues. I believe that all those who knew the late Hon. Mr. Justice Fredrick Ochieng' Andago, have been left with the legacy of his work, and will remember him as a great man with a contagious sense of humour and a dedicated focus to the justice system. I can only say, fare thee well. May your legacy of justice and humanity endure in the hearts of all those whom you served and the Nation of Kenya. May your light never be forgotten. Rest in peace Hon. Mr. Justice Fredrick Ochieng' Andago.

Ochieng JA, your is an immense loss both to the judiciary and his family and friends. You were a great jurist and a great human being. You touched both the great and the lowly with the same respect and warmth. You always had a consistent smile and jovial mood. And great dance moves. It was always a joy to interact with you. We shall miss you Judge. Go well.

It is with profound grief and a heavy heart that I mourn the passing of my dear friend and mentor, Justice Fred Ochieng. As a mediator, CEO of Kisumu Mediation Center, and founder of Calm Resolve Hub, I feel both a personal emptiness and a professional void that words cannot fully capture. Justice Ochieng was more than an exceptional Judge. He was a guiding light who believed in the promise of mediation and in the people called to advance it. He patiently nurtured my confidence, urging me never to fear addressing the public or sharing mediation’s message through radio and media platforms. His wisdom, encouragement, and faith in me left an indelible mark on my life and calling. I remain forever indebted to his vision and commitment. His legacy will endure in the mediators he inspired, the institutions he uplifted, and the values he so passionately lived by. On behalf of Kisumu Mediation Center, Calm Resolve Hub, and the entire mediation fraternity, I extend heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and the judiciary. May Justice Ochieng’s noble soul rest in eternal peace, and may his memory continue to inspire us all. Sam Ouma Poleni sana 🙏Heart broken and dumbfounded! I totally share in this!
