Tributes to the Late Hon. Mr. Justice Fredrick Ochieng’ Andago

On behalf of the Judiciary and the Judicial Service Commission, I convey with profound sadness the news of the passing of Hon. Justice Fredrick Ochieng Andago, Judge of the Court of Appeal of Kenya. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Judiciary during this time of great sorrow.

Β

Justice Ochieng joined the Judiciary in 2003 as a Judge of the High Court, where he served with distinction in various stations, including the Civil Division, Kitale, Kakamega, the Criminal Division, the Commercial and Admiralty Division, and Kisumu. In 2022, he was elevated to the Court of Appeal.

Β

He will be fondly remembered as a towering figure in the development of Kenya’s commercial law jurisprudence and as a strong advocate for the promotion of alternative dispute resolution. At the time of his passing, he was serving as the Chairperson of the Court Annexed Mediation Taskforce, which is spearheading the national roll-out of Court-Annexed Mediation.

Β

Prior to joining the Judiciary, he had a distinguished career as an Advocate of the High Court in the firm of Kaplan & Stratton Advocates for almost two decades.

Β

We stand in solidarity with his family, friends, and the entire Judiciary community during this difficult period of mourning. We call for sensitivity and compassion as we share in this collective grief.

May Hon. Justice Fred Ochieng’s soul rest in eternal peace.

Β

Hon. Justice Martha K. Koome, EGH

Chief Justice and Chairperson of the Judicial Service Commission

Tributes Shared

This man has been a mediation pillar. I first met him at Strathmore University. May the LORD Rest His Soul in Eternal Peace.

Excellent brother Great brother Fare thee well

You were an exceptional Judge. You were free and very warm to each an every person you met. I worked with you in various stations and I can attest that you will be missed dearly. Your working relationship had no boundaries. Shine on your to heaven Judge. Rest in Eternal peace. May your family and friends and All who knew you know that God will give them fortitude during this sad moment.

Justice Fred Ochieng’ was brilliant, forthright, firm, and a very fair judge. I saw his dedication to duty both at the bench and in the boardroom when he chaired our Taskforce on Court-Annexed Mediation. As an advocate, you wouldn’t want to attend his courtroom unprepared because he was serious about service delivery. Interestingly, the judge maintained a good sense of humour. He was truly passionate about mediation, and he led the Taskforce to transform it from a little-known ADR mechanism to the now popular Court-Annexed Mediation, now anchored in law. May his soul rest well. Paul Wanga Advocate and a member of the Taskforce on Court-Annexed Mediation.

The late Justice Fred Ochieng was a treasure given by God to the mediators in Kenya. He had been a pillar, down to earth, and an honourable person. May God give his family, friends, colleagues and the mediation fraternity all the grace and comfort required at this time.

As a practicing Advocate and Mediator your words of wisdom and encouragement will forever remain etched into my heart and soul. You approached and guided us all as a human being first and a judicial officer second.Ever amicable and smiling . Go in peace Senior Hon Justice Fred.

Hon Judge, u were a pillar of wisdom and excellence in the Judiciary. No one interacted with you and went home dull. Your jokes, your ever jovial mood lightened up everyone and everything around you.. In you, heaven has gained an angel. May you RIP. Till we meet again.

I have still not found the right words to express my shock and grieve at the passing of Justice Fred Ochieng. I looked up to him when he practiced law as a partner at Kaplan & Stratton and was subsequently always happy to appear before him as a Judge in the Commercial Division and later in the Court of Appeal. Working with him to formulate and develop a mediation framework for Kenya was an honour and a privilege. I will remember his wit, his sharp intellect but most of all, his humanity. Go well Judge. You are in a better place. Sincere condolences to his family and to the entire legal fraternity. We have lost a great man.
