Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Demonstrations and Public Protests members sworn in
The Chief Registrar of the Judiciary, Hon. Winfridah B. Mokaya, CBS, today presided over the swearing-in of members of the Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Demonstrations and Public Protests.
In her remarks, the CRJ noted that the establishment of the Panel is a powerful statement that the Constitution is alive and responsive to the needs of Kenyans. She emphasized that the compensation process will serve as one of the clearest reassurances to citizens that the rights guaranteed under the Constitution are not abstract promises but binding obligations that must be respected, protected, and fulfilled.
Hon. Mokaya observed that while no amount of compensation can erase the grief of families who lost loved ones, the process affirms accountability as the bedrock of justice, ensuring that such losses will not be forgotten.
She further underscored the need to anchor the compensation framework in legislation to guarantee consistency, transparency, and enforceability, while encouraging the Panel to propose reforms that address the root causes of protests and prevent a recurrence of violence.
Prof Makau Mutua was sworn in as chairperson of the panel while the LSK President Faith Odhiambo as the Vice chairperson. Others who took oath as members are; Kennedy Ogeto, Irungu Houghton, Dr. John Olukuru, Rev. Fr. Kennedy Barasa Simiyu, Dr. Linda Musumba, Dr. Duncan Ojwang’, Naini Lankas, Dr. Francis Muraya, Juliet Chepkemei, Pius Metto, Raphael Anampiu and John Maina. Richard Barno, Dr. Duncan Okelo Ndeda and Churchill Suba took oath as Technical Experts, while Jerusah Mwaathime, Dr Raphael Ngétich and Daki Guyo, as Joint Secretaries.
