Wellness central to enhancing service delivery — CJ Koome

NAIROBI. Friday, September 12, 2025. Wellness central to enhancing service delivery — CJ Koome

Chief Justice Martha Koome has reaffirmed that wellness is essential to the Judiciary’s ability to effectively serve the people of Kenya.

Speaking during the closing ceremony of the Judiciary Sports Day, held under the theme “Fitness for Justice: Balancing Wellness, Integrity and Service,” the Chief Justice emphasized that the Judiciary cannot function without its most vital resource — its people.

“Our people are our greatest asset. Their wellness is not a luxury; it is a constitutional and institutional necessity,” she stated.

CJ Koome reiterated that under the ‘Social Transformation through Access to Justice (STAJ) blueprint, the Judiciary has committed to building “an inspired team of Judges, Judicial Officers, and staff dedicated to excellence in the delivery of justice.”

She underscored that this commitment involves ensuring that those who serve within the institution are whole, healthy, and inspired, because only an inspired team can deliver inspired justice.

“As Chief Justice, I firmly believe that our true strength lies in our people. Buildings, systems, budgets, and technology are important, but they are ineffective without Judges, Judicial Officers, and staff. That’s why employee wellness is a strategic priority for the Judiciary,” she affirmed.

Highlighting the link between wellness and performance, the CJ observed that physical fitness contributes to mental alertness and emotional resilience.

“A team that is physically strong is also mentally alert. A team that has opportunities for recreation is less prone to stress, burnout, and fatigue. This leads to higher morale, sharper focus, and greater creativity in the delivery of justice,” she noted.

CJ Koome also emphasized the importance of peer-to-peer accountability as a key aspect of wellness saying that wellness should be everyone’s collective responsibility. “Therefore, let us hold one another accountable in ensuring that wellness becomes part of our culture, not just an occasional activity,” urged the CJ.

Speaking at the same event, the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Winfridah Mokaya explained that 2025 Sports Day expanded to include culture and talent noting that the idea was to promote the principle of work-life balance by encouraging Judicial Officers and Staff to showcase their capabilities in other areas outside the Judiciary.

“I am confident that after this exercise, we shall see deeper understanding, comity and collaboration across our teams within and across different stations and offices, and – above all – that this will translate into improved service delivery to our clients,” said the CRJ.
