CJ Koome and Kakamega Governor Barasa discuss justice delivery in the region

CJ Martha Koome today met with Kakamega County Governor Fernandes Barasa to discuss justice delivery in Kakamega County and the Western region.
The Chief Justice noted that the establishment of a Court of Appeal in Kakamega has greatly enhanced access to appellate justice in the region and pointed out that more than 1000 matters are already being handled in the court.
Further, CJ Koome emphasized that Kakamega is one of the large courts in the country. There are subordinate courts, a High Court with three Judges, Environment and Land Court as well as Employment and Labour Relations Court. In addition, a Small Claims Court has been established in Hamisi Law Courts, thereby improving access to justice especially to the business community.
The CJ invited the County Government and all stakeholders to participate actively in enhancing justice delivery.
Governor Barasa appreciated the various initiatives that are enhancing justice in the region, pointing out that Mediation and Alternative Justice Systems are very suitable avenues to meet the justice needs in the area.
“As the County Government, we undertake to support the formal establishment of an Alternative Justice Systems Centre as well as a Mediation Centre in Kakamega. We pledge our support to these efforts that are bringing justice close to the people.” He said.
The Governor brought to the attention of the Chief Justice the need to construct more courts especially in sub-counties where courts don’t exist, starting with Lukuyani.’ Further, the County Government requested for expediting of cases, especially in matters that have a large impact on the public.
CJ Koome reminded the Judiciary fraternity that Judiciary has zero tolerance to corruption and bribery.
“We cannot be dispensing justice on one hand and seeking bribes with the other hand. We invite all stakeholders in Kakamega, and indeed across the country, to participate actively in the Court Users Committee in the courts in the region and also join the recently established Court Integrity Committees,” the CJ underscored.
