IAWJ launch Collective Empowerment Network programme
The International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) – Kenya Chapter has launched the Collective Empowerment Network, Women in Leadership in Law (CEN WILIL) programme, an initiative arising from the partnership between the IAWJ and the IAWJ – Kenya Chapter.
CEN seeks to empower women Judges and Magistrates through the structured implementation of key activities such as mentorship, sponsorship, networking opportunities, topical workshops, dialogues with judicial leaders and decision-makers, communities of practice, and a leadership development series.
Chief Justice Martha Koome said CEN Women in Law and Leadership Programme is a transformative initiative aimed at creating an enabling environment for women judges and magistrates to thrive.
“It will foster leadership opportunities through mentorship, training, and exposure, preparing women for leadership roles and equipping them to handle the complexities of contemporary justice systems. Additionally, the programme will build collaborative networks by connecting individuals across different levels of experience and expertise, creating a supportive ecosystem where mentorship, collaboration, and shared learning thrive.”
During the event, officials and members of the IAWJ – Kenya Chapter reflected on their experiences and benefits of mentorship as mentors, mentees and members of the association. They acknowledged that mentorship builds confidence and enhances skills, character, knowledge, and performance in courts. The CEN is a structured mentorship programme that is in line with the Social Transformation through Access to Justice blueprint (STAJ).
Other speakers included IAWJ – Kenya Chapter President Justice Hellen Omondi and former IAWJ President Justice Hannah Okwengu. Justices Agnes Murgor and Jessie Lesiit shared their experiences virtually.
