Judiciary committed to decongesting remands The Judiciary is committed to implementing programmes and polices that are aimed at fast-tracking cases and decongesting remand facilities. Homa Bay Senior Principal Magistrate Thomas Obutu told Homa Bay GK Prison inmates that the court is keen to fast-track cases that have been pending before the court. He added that it is also keen on reviewing sentences for prisoners who have improved under rehabilitation program as well as for those serving short terms. CJ inspects service delivery at Nyeri

Chief Justice David Maraga toured Nyeri Law Courts in October 2018 to inspect delivery of service and renovation of court rooms at the station. During the visit, the CJ held meetings with members of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and media, as well as judicial officers and staff. Some of the issues that were discussed with staff include staff promotions, re-designations, remuneration as well as participation in Judiciary’s decision-making process, among others. Dispute resolution made easier

The Judiciary has set up a registry at the Kisumu Law Courts that will handle cases targeted for mediation. The Court Annexed Mediation (CAM) Registry was officially opened by the High Court Principle Judge, Lady Justice Lydia Achode, in an event attended by members of the Judicial Service commission (JSC), Mediation Taskforce, stakeholders, staff and members of the public, among other guests. The registry comes as a relief to the people of Kisumu who now have an alternative mechanism in addition to courts, to solve disputes. Court meets to improve performance

Busia Law Courts staff met to discuss ways of improving service delivery at the station on November 8, 2018. The meeting attended by judicial officers and staff deliberated on how to improve their 2018/2019 Performance Management and Measurement Understanding (PMMU). The deliberations go a long way to enhance access to justice, speedy disposal of cases as well as the use of new case management system. Busia ELC gets Legal Researcher

The Environment and Land Court (ELC) in Busia has a new Legal Researcher. Ms Marcella Atieno Oloo joined the court on November 5, 2018. This is the first time the court has hired a researcher to support judicial officers in legal research. Ms Oloo was recruited by the Judicial Service Commission to enhance capacity at the court. She is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya after having been admitted to the Bar in December 2014.
