Shanzu Law Courts: Transformation Through a Magistrate’s Eyes

When she reported at the Shanzu Law Courts three years ago as the head of station, Hon Diana Mochache found that the station had one Magistrate and one court room, commonly referred to as Court 1.  There was no courtroom for an additional judicial officer. There was need then to improvise and create a room for use as Court 2. However, the room was too small to accommodate a large number of people. Kabarnet High Court Presiding Judge Edward M.Muriithi speaks with staff on the procedure of drafting and preparation of court orders and decrees. The preparation of court orders and decrees constitute part of their day-to -day duties in the court. CJ inspects service delivery at Nyeri

Chief Justice David Maraga toured Nyeri Law Courts in October 2018 to inspect delivery of service and renovation of court rooms at the station. During the visit, the CJ held meetings with members of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and media, as well as judicial officers and staff. Some of the issues that were discussed with staff include staff promotions, re-designations, remuneration as well as participation in Judiciary’s decision-making process, among others. Enhanced access to justice at Makindu Law Courts

Makindu Law Court was established in 1998. It was constructed by members of the public through the “food for work” programme. The residents bought food and used the proceeds to buy bricks and construct the court. Before the construction of the court, litigants used to travel over 125km to Machakos Law Courts to receive court services. Makindu Law Court is one of the four courts in Makueni County. Judiciary committed to decongesting remands The Judiciary is committed to implementing programmes and polices that are aimed at fast-tracking cases and decongesting remand facilities. Homa Bay Senior Principal Magistrate Thomas Obutu told Homa Bay GK Prison inmates that the court is keen to fast-track cases that have been pending before the court. He added that it is also keen on reviewing sentences for prisoners who have improved under rehabilitation program as well as for those serving short terms. Dispute resolution made easier

The Judiciary has set up a registry at the Kisumu Law Courts that will handle cases targeted for mediation. The Court Annexed Mediation (CAM) Registry was officially opened by the High Court Principle Judge, Lady Justice Lydia Achode, in an event attended by members of the Judicial Service commission (JSC), Mediation Taskforce, stakeholders, staff and members of the public, among other guests. The registry comes as a relief to the people of Kisumu who now have an alternative mechanism in addition to courts, to solve disputes.
