MEDIATION SETTLEMENT WEEK

The Judiciary has launched Mediation Settlement Week at Milimani Law Courts to resolve mediation cases in five courts. nThe number of offenders who have not been convicted has significantly reduced in the country’s remand facilities following the implementation of policy guidelines developed in 2015 to guide police and judicial officers in the application of laws that provide for bail and bond.nnA High Court Judge at Milimani’s Criminal Division, Justice Luka Kimaru, said the prisons now hold more convicted offenders than accused persons whose cases are still before court. The Presidential petition has been heard and determined by the Supreme Court. Election petitions challenging the county and parliamentary posts will be determined within 6 months from the date of filing. The Judiciary Committee on Elections (JCE) was launched in August, 2015 as a standing committee to spearhead preparations by the Judiciary to discharge its constitutional mandate with regard to election disputes resolution.nnThe Committee in preparation for the forthcoming 2017 elections reviewed the Elections (Parliamentary and County Elections) Petition Rules 2013 and Supreme Court (Presidential Election Petition) Rules 2013.
